Our Story

Four decades of vision, perseverance, and community. The journey of Moi Girls Senior School, Marsabit, from a bold idea to a beacon of excellence in northern Kenya.

Since 1984

The first girls' boarding school in the region.

Founded in 1984, Moi Girls Senior School Marsabit began as the first girls' boarding school in the region.

It was established specifically to provide educational opportunities for nomadic girls in Marsabit District.

At a time when educating daughters was often viewed as unnecessary in pastoralist communities, the school's founding represented a bold vision. It was a commitment to proving that girls from this region deserved the same access to quality education as anyone else.

What started with basic infrastructure, funded by the Ministry of Education and supported by well-wishers, has grown into a thriving institution.

The school's journey reflects the remarkable progress of girls' education in Marsabit County. When it opened its doors, it was the only girls' secondary school in the district, drawing students from across the vast, arid landscape of northern Kenya.

Over the decades, Moi Girls has grown from those humble beginnings into a fully-fledged national school. It is classified as C1 and consistently ranked among the best girls' schools in the region.

The school has become synonymous with academic excellence and discipline, with students achieving high university transition rates year after year.

As the institution adapted to Kenya's changing education landscape, it transitioned from the 8-4-4 system to the Competency Based Curriculum. It became a Senior School for Grade 10 through Grade 12.

Today's students specialize in one of three pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports. Each pathway offers diverse subject combinations that prepare girls for careers in fields ranging from medicine and engineering to law, journalism, and the creative arts. This modern curriculum builds on the school's enduring mission to train and equip girls with knowledge, skills, and morals for self-actualization.

Today, Moi Girls Senior School Marsabit stands as a testament to what vision, perseverance, and community support can achieve. From those early days as the only girls' secondary school in the district, it has become a beacon of hope and excellence in northern Kenya. Generations of alumnae have gone on to lead, to serve, and to light the way for others. Their stories embody the school's motto, Strive to Shine. From these grounds in Marsabit, girls continue to rise, proving every day that with education, anything is possible.

Strive to Shine

The story of Moi Girls is still being written, one student at a time. Every girl who walks through our gates adds a new chapter to a legacy built on vision, perseverance, and community.
